Have you ever had to stand up to someone and make a point?

First time yesterday. As you all know, I'm keeping all my options open as far as high speed internet. Well, I called Galaxy and left a 5-minute message on their answering machine explaining that Xplornet was cheaper and unless Galaxy offered some sort of other incentive, I would go with Xplornet instead.

Well, the guy called me back today and said that he could get one of his supervisors to offer me a discount.

Amazing, isn't it? If you ask for a discount, they don't give you one. If you threaten them by saying you'll sign up with someone else, then they give you a discount.

Seriously. Do we have to threaten companies these days so we can save money?

from my experiance...yes...i used to do that alot when it came of boardband internet...even if i didnt have the fact i would still do it just for a deal...

like saying im leaving because ive got a better deal and the next thing i get is a kind man/lady asking...no begging me to stay with them and they would give me a discount...all in all ive picked up routers, better speed and discounts

i do the same with my mobile phone...well not mine...mostly my parents...and they usually get new phones at lower monthly prices...

but i guess its all in the name of competition. i studied this back in college in economics that competition is what keps companies aflot...if one company cuts its prices...and offers you a deal then it is likely that other companies will follow just for service...unless your dealing with a compnay that has a monopoly status...then thats a different story

I'll be moving out of my parents house in a few years, so I'll hopefully be able to use the valuable skills here.

haggling is one skills ive picked up from my parents...my mums is very price aware and shes usaully knows how to get a deal...whiles still having quality.

and it really just help for a student like me living out for my first year at university...well usaully stuff like food shopping and stuff like that its not really helpful...but other things like passes and bills it helps

Well, I think it also has to do with price too.

I mean, it's gonna cost me $1,000 for initial installation on getting the satellite dish mounted on a pole outside my house, regardless of whether I go with Galaxy or Xplornet. So I think they realize that $1,000 is a lot of money, which is why I said on the phone, "From what you've told me, it's going to cost me $300 for the equipment, $300 for the install, and $300 to have the installer stick a pole in the ground and cement it, so with taxes you can already see that the total cost would be around $1,000 bucks."

Plus I buttered him up by saying that I wanted to go with them due to their experience, newest equipment, and how long they've been in business.

So essentially, I appealed to their good side and threatened them at the same time. Pretty cool, isn't it?

Anyways, I'm hoping Nexicom finds a wireless signal in my area, so I can go with them for $150 installation instead of going with Galaxy or Xplornet, but I'm trying to get a deal from them as a backup plan. I'm gonna call this guy back on Monday to "negotiate", dannyblue-style.

hope that goes well for you....all i can say is act calm and dont let them scare you...and dont let them found out what your really trying to do...also dont jump in too quick go slow and you should be able to talk the company down by alot...and if you really want to get it lower...get correct facts about their the competition...the more details you can give them the more scared they will become about you not taking up their offer...and dont go for the frist offer....and if they ask you to give them a price...dont go in at a very low price...give them some slack as after all they will be losing profits from giving you discounts lol

I'm psyched! Nexicom showed up at my house today. They got up on this ladder and waved this 6-foot tall pole in the air trying to pick up a wireless signal. Well, they received a strong signal from one of their towers, even though they didn't think it would reach here. I think it was around 80% or 90% strength.

So I can go with them for 3 MBPS download speed at $44.99 a month. Much better than paying Galaxy or Xplornet $79.99 a month for 1.2 MBPS, plus the initial $1,000 installation fee for the equipment.

There's only 1 catch. When Nexicom was here trying to pick up the wireless signal, they only got it by waving their pole 6 feet above the highest point of our chimney. So, we actually need to get someone else to install a pole that rises at least 6 feet above our chimney, then we can call Nexicom back to install the modem on the top of it.

So, if everything goes as planned, which I hope it does, then give me about 1 or 2 weeks and we should be up and running on UNLIMITED wireless high-speed internet!

good on you scoot...yet hearing your speeds i wont class as high speed internet...but then again your running via wireless rather then cabled..but its still good
